Obituary of Timothy J. Selby

Slingerlands - Timothy James Selby, 70, passed peacefully from this life on December 21, 2020, at St. Peter’s Hospital after a brief illness with his wife by his side. Tim was born in Amsterdam, NY, on October 9, 1950, son of the late James B. Selby and Ethel Stewart Chirico. He attended Wilbur H. Lynch High School, graduating in 1968. Tim received a Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education from the State University College in Oneonta, NY, and a Master’s in Social Welfare from the State University of New York in Albany, NY. Tim worked as a Social Worker and Social Work Supervisor at Parsons Child and Family Center in Albany for 30 years, retiring in February 2014. Tim enjoyed working with children, particularly teenagers. Ever empathetic, genuine and caring, he always felt that he could learn as much if not more from them as they could from him. Tim was consistently active in his sons’ activities. He spent six years as the Cub Master of Cub Scout Pack 73 in Voorheesville during the 1990’s as well as many years coaching them in basketball and baseball. Tim’s passions were his family, the NY Yankees and baseball. He was happiest when spending time with his family or on a baseball diamond whether coaching or attending a game. He looked forward to his family’s annual tradition of attending a game at the hallowed grounds of Yankees Stadium, which occurred for 40 years. Tim coached baseball for many years including when his sons played, and continued coaching until the time of his death. Most recently, Tim was an assistant for the Varsity Baseball Team at Voorheesville High School, beloved by the young men he coached. Tim is survived by his devoted wife of 43 years, Mildred E. Selby and his sons Patrick D. (Samantha Marcone) Selby and Robert J. (Lauren) Selby. His sister, Nancy A. VanWormer, brother-in-law Frank VanWormer, sisters-in-law Katherine Schneider and Theresa Chavez, and his stepfather, John Chirico, also survive him. His nephews Christopher VanWormer and Sean Chavez, nieces Kimberly and Sara VanWormer, as well as grandnieces, grandnephew and many cousins, also survive Tim. In addition to his parents, Tim was predeceased by his stepbrother John Chirico. The family would like to thank all of the staff of the Intensive Care Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital for the kind and compassionate care that was given to Tim and his family. Friends are invited and may call at St. Matthew’s Church, 25 Mountainview Street, Voorheesville, NY on Monday, December 28, 2020, beginning at 9:30 AM followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 Noon. Interment will immediately follow the Mass at Cavalry Cemetery, Route 9W, Glenmont, NY. In accordance with COVID-19 restrictions, seating for the Mass in St. Matthew’s will be limited. Facial masks are required and social distancing will be observed.
