Obituary of Howard W. Bishop

Voorheesville - Howard W. Bishop, born on December 4, 1928 to the late Kenneth and Anne Long Bishop, passed away on July 27, 2018. Howard graduated from Ravena High School in 1944 and received his Bachelor’s degree in chemistry from Union College in 1948 at the age of 18. He retired in 1995 after working 47 years as a research chemist at Sterling Winthrop Research Institute. He leaves behind Gertrude O’Brien Bishop, his devoted wife of over 60 years. Other survivors include his sons, Thomas W. Bishop (Melinda) and Scott J. Bishop (Doreen). Also surviving are his granddaughters, Krista Hillicoss (Rich), Amy Scharff (Chris), Keri Freiler, Kelly Owens, and Schuyler Ryan (Patrick); along with great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Joshua, Benjamin, Derek, Alyssa, Andrew and Cameron.

Howard was an avid Boston Red Sox fan and a superior athlete in his own rite. He played semiprofessional baseball as a young man and pitched competitively in numerous fast pitch softball leagues until the age of 70. He thoroughly enjoyed following baseball, bowling, stamp collecting, yard work and spending time with family.

The family would like to thank all of the special people who helped Howard enjoy his last days at home with Gertrude, especially, Howard’s neighbors, Todd and Darcie Hurteaue, his care givers, Linda and Erica Martin, Kimmy Marx-Morelli, Emily Riordan and Danielle Martin.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, July 30 from 4 to 7PM at the Reilly & Son Funeral Home, 9 Voorheesville Ave, Voorheesville. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, July 31 at St. Matthew’s Church, 25 Mountainview St., Voorheesville, NY 12186. Interment will be held immediately following the mass at Calvary Cemetery, 481 Route 9W, Glenmont, NY 12077.
