Dr. William John Jameson , Jr. of Loudonville, NY and Beaufort, SC died on April 5, 2017. He was born in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) on July 30, 1924 to Dr. William John Jameson, Sr., an esteemed medical missionary, and Gladys Thompson Jameson. He is survived by his wife Judith Latch Jameson, married nearly 50 years, and his son, William John Jameson III of New York.
Dr. Jameson was predeceased by his parents and his sisters, Mary Elizabeth Jameson Rusnak and Gladys Jameson Hvamb, and his brother, Gerardus Smith Jameson MD.
Dr. Jameson was reared in Manipay, Ceylon where his father established the first hospital in the country and was recognized by premier civil rights leader, Mahatma Gandhi. Dr. Jameson Jr. had the opportunity during his visit to meet Mr. Gandhi in recognition of his father's efforts.
He was inducted into the US Navy in 1942 and served in the Asiatic/Pacific Theater, including the Battle of Guadalcanal, where he was a corpsman. He went on to become a Scout and Raider (Navy Seal.) Dr. Jameson did not share many of his wartime experiences, but he was very proud of his service and the people with whom he served.
He graduated from Nott Terrace High School, Union College, and NY Medical College.
Dr. Jameson, an obstetrician and gynecological surgeon for over 50 years, served as Chief of Staff at Bellevue Hospital for Women. Though widely recognized for his many achievements, Dr. Jameson was a private and unassuming man. His compassionate care and love of his patients were the guiding principles of his practice.
For almost 50 years he was a member of Schuyler Meadows Club, Loudonville.
The funeral was held in Beaufort, SC. Graveside services will be held April 29th at 2:00 pm at Memory Gardens, Colonie. A reception for friends and family at Schuyler Meadows will follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the following: NY Medical College, Valhalla, NY and Union College.
