Obituary of Frederick B. Meservey

Voorheesville - Frederick Bruce Meservey, 67, passed away October 9, 2016 in Community Hospice at St. Peter's Hospital in Albany. Son of the late Bruce and Bertha Bronson Meservey, Fred was born in Baldwinsville, NY and grew up in Altamont. He attended Guilderland schools and graduated with a Master's degree in Social Work from the University of Albany. He was employed by the NYS Office of Substance Abuse and Alcoholism Services, (OASAS), retiring in 2010. He then worked as the founding director of the Suicide Prevention Center of NY (SPCNY) from 2010-2015. After he retired from full-time employment, he continued to share his vast professional knowledge as a consultant for agencies such as Policy Research Associates, Addiction Center of Albany and the NYS Department of Health.
Fred was recognized for his tireless work in suicide prevention with the MHANYS CEO's Award and the SPCNY Hope and Life Award. SPCNY also created an award in his honor, the Frederick B. Meservey Life and Leadership Award, which recognizes those whose outstanding leadership and contributions improve the quality of lives in New York State
Fred was a member of St. Matthew's Church in Voorheesville. He was a member of the Men's Club and was a Lector at Mass, serving as an instructor for other lectors. He volunteered at the New Scotland Community Food Pantry. He also served on the boards for the Mental Health Association in New York State, Inc. (MHANYS) and the NY Chapter of the American Federation of Suicide Prevention (AFSP). .
Fred was predeceased by his first wife, Bonnie Binder Meservey. He is survived by his loving wife, Penny Smith-Bogert; his sons, Daniel (Joy) Meservey of Havertown, PA and Marc Meservey of Worcester, MA.; his step-children, Jessica Bogert of Troy and Aaron Bogert of Albany; and two grandchildren, Benjamin and Elizabeth Meservey of Havertown, PA. He is also survived by his sisters, Carol Ward of Voorheesville and Gale (Jay) Schnorr of Ft. Pierce, FL and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He will also be missed by his beloved Jack Russell Terrier, "Jackie."
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Mass, 10 am, Wednesday at St. Matthew's Church, 25 Mountainview St., Voorheesville and may also visit at the Church Tuesday from 4 - 7 pm. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Glenmont.
